Activities onboard the ship

Your safety is priority. Experienced and highly trained expert guides from Svalbard will accompany all excursions, equipped with the knowledge and tools to handle encounters with polar bears. All planned activities are subject to change based on weather and ice conditions to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all passengers.

Landings

Depending on weather and ice conditions, the Expedition Team will use Zodiac boats to attempt various landings throughout our sailing.

Onboard Lectures

You can enjoy onboard lectures by the Expedition Team, who will tell you more about Svalbard and the areas we are exploring. They will also lead daily recaps and preparation for the next day.

Wildlife watching

As we sail there will be plenty of opportunities for wildlife spotting, with the chance to spot seals, reindeer, walruses and if you are lucky - the king of the Arctic, the iconic polar bear.

Overview

With four nights at sea, you’ll have excellent opportunities to spot polar bears, walruses, and seabirds, making this the perfect adventure for nature lovers. Start your trip midweek and fully immerse yourself in the Arctic's wonders before returning to Longyearbyen for your journey home.

Itinerary

Day 1 Wednesday - Longyearbyen, Svalbard: Mining history and Arctic nature Arrive in Longyearbyen, where we will meet you at the airport to transfer to your hotel. From there you can explore the town, visit the North Pole Expedition Museum, and enjoy a two-course dinner at your hotel restaurant. Overnight stay at either Radisson Blu Polar Hotel or Funken Lodge, depending on your cabin category. Day 2 Thursday - Longyearbyen and Isfjorden: Settlements of the far north  Morning at leisure in Longyearbyen, with a two-course lunch at your hotel, before a guided tour that includes the Svalbard Museum and Camp Barentz. Embark on the MS Serenissima and sail through Isfjorden, observing Arctic wildlife and historical sites. Day 3 Friday - Magdalenefjorden and Svalbard's North West Corner: Into the Arctic wilderness  Enter remote Arctic areas without communication signals, and explore Magdalenefjorden's alpine-like scenery, historical whaling sites, and rich birdlife. Potential landing depends on weather and ice conditions. Day 4 Saturday - Woodfjorden, Liefdefjorden, Moffen, and 80° North: Scanning for polar bears  Explore the diverse landscapes of Woodfjorden and Liefdefjorden, and scan for polar bears and other wildlife. If conditions allow, sail above 80° North and approach Moffen Island, known for its walrus population. Day 5 Sunday - Kongsfjorden and Ny-Ålesund: Fjords, glaciers, and research  Discover the scenic Kongsfjorden, hike on the tundra, and visit the research settlement of Ny-Ålesund. Learn about Arctic exploration history and send a postcard from the northernmost post office in the world. Upon arrival in Ny-Ålesund, the ship will dock at the pier, and passengers can disembark directly from the ship onto land. Day 6 Monday - Longyearbyen: depart for home Departure day, with transfer from the ship to Radisson Blu Polar Hotel Spitsbergen. From here you have another opportunity to explore Longyearbyen and buy souvenirs before a transfer to the airport. PLEASE NOTE The day-by-day programme offers a glimpse of what you can expect during your voyage, but please remember that this itinerary is just a guide. As with any adventure, the elements are in charge, and weather conditions may lead to changes along the way.

Step aboard the MS Serenissima for an unforgettable short cruise along Spitsbergen's west coast. This Arctic cruise ship seamlessly blends the charm of a classic ocean liner with modern amenities. Originally built as the Harald Jarl for Hurtigruten in 1960 at Trondhjem, the vessel has been renovated over the years and was most recently refurbished in 2019, preserving its history while ensuring a comfortable cruising experience. With a capacity for 103 guests, the MS Serenissima offers an intimate, relaxing atmosphere on Arctic circle cruises.

An experienced expedition team will be by your side throughout the cruise, sharing stories and insights about Svalbard's culture, nature, and history. They are fluent in Norwegian, English, French, and German, and are always available for questions. Each team member is passionate about Svalbard and eager to share their knowledge and enthusiasm for the archipelago, giving you as much insight as possible into the wildlife, places and culture you'll experience on the way. From the decks of the MS Serenissima, you can enjoy panoramic views, soak up the sun or take a leisurely stroll. The outdoor areas on this Arctic cruise ship feature an expansive observation deck, offering 360-degree views of the ocean and the surrounding landscape. From this vantage point, you can descend to the front deck (deck 5), which includes an open-air bar. The Venice Restaurant has a focus on great flavours and fresh ingredients, dining here is a highlight of your journey. The dining room features great views from all tables. Located at the front and back of MS Serenissima, the lounges are the perfect spot to relax and unwind after a day exploring the wonders of Svalbard.

Accommodation ranges from comfortable Standard or Superior cabins in single, twin or double bed configuration - all with private bathroom and portholes, or Deluxe cabins with windows. A small number of larger suites are available, with windows and one with balcony.

Essential Information

Rates, Share and Sole Use policy

All rates are quoted per person, based on shared or single occupancy according to available category. Sole use occupancy of Standard or Superior cabins is also possible with a supplement subject to availability - contact us for pricing details!

Deposits

Reservations require a deposit of 20% at the time you receive a booking confirmation from Expeditions Online. A payment link will be sent to you and this may be paid by major credit card. Bookings within 90 days of departure require full payment.

Final Payments

Balances are due 90 days prior to departure.

Cancellations

All requests for cancellation must be received in writing to Expeditions Online. Cancellations received 90 days or more prior to departure, are refunded less a fee of 20 % of the total price. If cancellation is received between 89 days and 60 days prior to departure, are refunded less a fee of 50 % of the total price. If cancellation occurs less than 59 days up to and including the day of departure: 100 % of the total price. If full payment has not yet been received, the full penalty will still apply and any unpaid balance is due immediately. We strongly recommend that you obtain adequate trip cancellation insurance.

This voyage is operated by Hurtigruten Svalbard and you additionally travel under their terms and conditions as the operator as well as of the Shipping Company/transport carrier. Details will be forwarded to you at the time of booking.

  • Accommodation and Transfers: A one-night stay in Longyearbyen before your voyage with transfers to and from the airport, hotel, and ship. 
  • Food and Drink: Full board as per the programme (breakfast, lunch, and dinner) with complimentary tea and coffee. 
  • Activities: A three-hour sightseeing tour in Longyearbyen including entrance to Svalbard Museum and a visit to Camp Barentz, guided landings with small expedition boats during the voyage, onboard lectures, and informal gatherings. 
  • Expedition Team: Local expert guides fluent in English, German, Norwegian, and French ensure an informative and enjoyable trip.  
  • Equipment: If you wish, you can borrow walking sticks and boots for the landings. Thermal suits are available on board to keep you extra warm when you're out on deck.

  • No gratuities expected
  • Disconnect and detox sailing - there is no Wi-Fi, internet access or mobile signal during the voyage (except in Longyearbyen and Ny-Ålesund)
  • When embarking or disembarking the ship in Longyearbyen, at the beginning and end of your voyage, the ship will either be docked alongside the port or anchored in the fjord outside. This means you will either embark/disembark directly from the port, or be tendered to the ship in Zodiac boats. This decision will depend on port capacity.
