Sail on board the boutique Magellan Explorer to the Falkland Islands, South Georgia, and Antarctica with this 20-day expedition. Embark in Punta Arenas, Chile, and navigate to the Falklands, where you will enjoy watching interesting native wildlife like the Rockhopper Penguin and Black-browed albatrosses. Connect with the locals who have called this archipelago home for generations. From there, set sail for South Georgia. Visit one of the world’s largest king penguin colonies and watch elephant seals relaxing on the shores. Then cruise along the Antarctic Peninsula and among the South Shetland Islands, visiting sites in the Antarctic Sound and in the Gerlache Strait. This is an expedition like no other.

Itinerary

Day 1 / Punta Arenas, Embarkation From 9:00 hrs., make your way to Explorers House in Punta Arenas and enjoy the facillities and educational opportunities of Antarctica21's exclusive expedition center. At 16:00 hrs., a group transfer will take you to the port for embarkation. As we sail along the Strait of Magellan, our Expedition Team will introduce the history of this fabled sea route. Day 2 / At Sea Enjoy the ship’s hospitality as we make our way to the Falklands. Our engaging series of lectures and presentations begins. Day 3 / Saunders Island, Carcass Island During a morning visit to Saunders Island, we enjoy the long white-sand beach. During this wilderness experience, the main attractions are observing rockhopper penguins, nesting black-browed albatross, and sub-Antarctic gentoo penguins. In the afternoon, we visit Carcass Island. There is an option for an easy hike to the settlement, bird watching, and a typical Falklands tea experience. Day 4 / Port Stanley Join our expedition team on guided walking tours of Port Stanley or Gipsy Cove. Or explore on your own and absorb the atmosphere of this isolated outpost in the South Atlantic. Day 5-6 / At Sea We sail eastwards across the Scotia Sea towards South Georgia. Our engaging series of lectures and presentations continues. Day 7 / Elsehul Bay Our first landing is at Grytviken. We clear Customs and then visit the historical site with the South Georgia Museum and Ernest Shackleton's grave. In the afternoon, we land at Fortuna Bay / Stromness to see king penguins. Here we learn more about Shackleton and his expedition, and there is also an optional 2-3 hour "Shackleton walk." Day 8 / Grytviken, Fortuna Bay / Stromness Morning landing at Grytviken. We’ll clear Customs here, then visit the historical site featuring the museum and Ernest Shackleton’s grave. In the afternoon, we plan for a landing at Fortuna Bay / Stromness. We’ll see king penguins and learn more about Shackleton and his expedition. There is an optional 2-3 hour “Shackleton walk. Day 9 / Salisbury Plain, Prion Island Morning visit to Salisbury Plain to observe more king penguins and stunning landscapes. In the afternoon, visit Prion Island to see the nesting wandering albatross. Day 10 / St. Andrews Bay, Cooper Bay Morning visit to St. Andrews Bay. We’ll see the largest king penguin colony and elephant seal bulls. In the afternoon, visit Cooper Bay to encounter macaroni penguins on a Zodiac cruise. Days 11-12 / At Sea After our epic days in South Georgia, we sail southwest across the Southern Ocean towards Antarctica. Our engaging series of lectures and presentations continues. Day 13 / Elephant Island In the afternoon, we will see Elephant Island. While a landing here is unlikely, we will see the island from the ship or, if sea conditions allow, from a Zodiac. Days 14-17 / Antarctic Peninsula & South Shetland Islands We cruise along the Antarctic Peninsula and among the South Shetland Islands, visiting sites in the Antarctic Sound and the Gerlache Strait. The voyage may include visits to sites such as Gourdin Island, Brown Bluff, Half Moon Island, Deception Island, Wilhelmina Bay, the Lemaire Channel, Cuverville Island, the Melchior Islands, or other magnificent places. Days 18-19 /At Sea Enjoy the ship’s hospitality as we make our way north across the Drake Passage. Our engaging series of lectures and presentations concludes. Day 20 / Ushuaia, Disembarkation Arrival in Ushuaia and disembarkation.

Magellan Explorer expedition vessel

Magellan Explorer is a small, luxurious and thoroughly modern expedition vessel, built in Chile 2019 to the very latest Polar Code specifications. Magellan Explorer has capacity for up to 96 passengers (76 for air-cruise operations) in seven categories of accommodation, including dedicated single cabins. All cabins except Porthole cabins feature private balconies. All double cabins except two have two twin beds that can be configured as one king-size bed. All cabins feature a wardrobe, individually controlled heating system, a sitting area, and a private bathroom with shower. The ship features a glass-enclosed observation lounge and presentation room with state-of-the-art audio-visual equipment, a spacious and stylish dining room, a well-stocked bar, a library, a meeting room, a gym, a sauna, and a medical clinic. The forward-facing observation deck leads to the bow of the ship, which is accessible to guests to offer proximity to marine wildlife. The ship has a fleet of 10 Zodiac boats that are well suited for disembarking and wildlife watching.

Booking Information

Essential Information

Deposits

Reservations require a deposit of $2500 per person at the time you receive a booking confirmation from Expeditions Online. A payment link will be sent to you and this may be paid by major credit card alternatively bank transfer. Bookings within 120 days of departure require full payment.

Final Payments

Balances are due 120 days prior to departure. Final payment can be made by calling us (final payment cannot be made online) and may be paid by major credit card (however subject to a 2% surcharge) or bank transfer.

Cancellations

All requests for cancellation must be received in writing to Expeditions Online. The following policy applies: Up to 180 days prior to departure: full refund of the deposit received, less a $1,000 USD per person.

179 and 120 days prior to departure: no refund of the deposit paid.

119 and 90 days prior to departure: refund of 10% of the amount paid, provided that the final payment has been received.

89 and 60 days prior to departure: refund of 7.5% of the amount paid, provided that the final payment has been received.

59 and 30 days prior to departure: refund of 5% of the amount paid, provided that the final payment has been received.

between 29 and the departure date: no refund whatsoever.

We strongly recommend that you obtain adequate trip cancellation insurance.

This expedition is operated by Antarctica21 and you additionally travel under their terms and conditions as the operator as well as of the Shipping Company/transport carrier. Details will be forwarded to you at the time of booking.

Single travellers can choose between:

Booking a dedicated single cabin.

Booking a twin cabin for single use. An 85% supplement will be added to the rate per person in twin cabin.

Sharing a twin cabin with another passenger (same gender cabins). No supplement is applied.

CONTINGENCY PLAN

In case that the flight to or from Antarctica cannot take place due to unfavourable weather conditions either at point of origin and/or destination, Antarctica21 will apply the Contingency Plan corresponding to each voyage (details on request).

  • Gratuities.
  • Visas for Chile and/or Argentina, passport expenses, and any arrival and/or departure tax, if applicable.
